Stanley Hauerwas, A Better Hope: Resources for a Church Confronting Capitalism, Democracy, and Postmodernity (Grand Rapids, MI: Brazos Press, 2000). 288 pp. $19.99, paper. Reviewed by Paul N. Alexander Hauerwas has done it again. The ethicist who will not let American Christians go unchallenged has issued another compilation of articles and musings that calls the church to be the church even when it gets us into trouble. Hauerwas continues his unrelenting attacks against sub- ordinating Christianity to the false gods of nationalism, against Christians forsaking their own language in order to dialogue with the world, and against using God to build America, because “the fundamental presup- positions that shaped much of American life and government were meant to destroy or at least marginalize the church.” He is determined not to allow this to happen. Hauerwas insists on bringing Jesus to the center of every discussion. Whether the issue is consumerism (and the false de nition of humans as merely consumers), capitalism and homosexuality (the former thrives on short-term commitments and values consumers who produce nothing), or friendship and aging, Hauerwas echoes John Howard Yoder’s commit- ment to believing that the way of Jesus is the grain of the
