A PARTICULAR KIND OF IDOLATRY AN EXEGESIS OF TERTULLIAN, DE IDOLOLATRIA CH. 23 BY J. H. WASZINK AND J. C. M. VAN WINDEN In 1960 our late colleague and friend, Prof. P. G. van der Nat, defended his thesis at Leiden University. It was an edition with in- troduction, translation and commentary on Tertullian's De idololatria chs. 1-9. This was published in a provisional form and was intended to be inserted in an edition of the whole treatise. His early death in May 1977 prevented the execution of this plan. Among his papers we found the commentary with translation completed until the end of ch. 12 and the text constituted of all the 24 chapters, with the exception of the 23rd. Obviously the difficulties mainly in the first paragraph of this chapter had been an obstacle to him. It is our intention to complete the work of Dr. van der Nat and to publish within a few years a critical text with translation and commen- tary of the treatise. The present paper is a preparatory study, in which we will try to con- stitute the text of ch.23 and to offer an exegesis of it. The correct understanding
