The Libertine Gnostic Sect of the Phibionites According To Epiphanius THE LIBERTINE GNOSTIC SECT OF THE PHIBIONITES ACCORDING TO EPIPHANIUS BY STEPHEN BENKO The following study is based primarily upon the Panarion of Epipha- nius,l especially the 26th chapter of it. It is clear, however, that he has a definite group in mind which we will call, for the sake of convenience "Phibionites" although Epiphanius knew of many names for these people as appears from the Prooemium to the Panaf-ion 1,4,3-8 where he lists them in group #6 with the following remark: "Gnostics, also called Stratiotici, Phibionites, Secundians, Socratians, Zackheans, Coddians, Barborites, Barbeliotes." The same general listing also occurs in the Anakephalaeosis to Panarion, Book 1, part 2; Ancoratus 13,2; Panarion prooem. 5,4; 25,2,1 (where the name "Levitikoi" also is included, see 26,13,1) and 26,3,6f.
