194 A REMARK ON THE LEGEND OF THE SACRIFICIAL SMOKE OF CAIN AND ABEL BY A. SCHEIBER V. Aptowitzer, the worthy researcher of the legends of Cain and Abel, has pointed out that the motive of the smoke of Abel's sacrifice ascending to heaven and of Cain's settling down on the earth, occurs in Byron's Cain for the first time 1. His view was also shared in by B. Heller, the prominent scholar of the comparative history of legends 2. About one decade and a half ago I published a paper in Hungarian, in which I pointed out that this motive was in the literature mentioned by Erasmus as early as 1499, and was treated of in a Hungarian verse in 1557, whereas in art we find instances for it as early as the 12th century 3. In reviewing my paper, G. Vajda alluded to a previous datum in Claudius Marius Victorius 4. The article of P. F. Hovingh that has just appeared, corroborates the results of my investigations 5.
