This final addition to a series of thirteen imposing volumes completes—within the timespan of only seven years—the vast project of translating the fourth edition of Religion in Geschichte und Gegenwart ( rgg 4 ) into English. The original rgg 4 appeared in the years 1998-2005 in eight volumes comprising more than 15.000 articles in German by nearly 4000 authors from 74 countries, while its concluding index volume ( Register ) appeared in 2007. Thus, only a few years later, the English version of the whole rgg 4 , including a new Index volume, has become available for the global academic community. All this has been brought about by a team under the guidance of Dr David Orton. rpp is an encyclopedia which covers the whole field of ‘religion’. The interested reader—and in particular those involved in scholarly work—may find here first-hand information on its many manifestations, both past and present.
