This competition was organised by the Dutch hand-bookbinders' league, a joint venture currently being estab- lished by the Stichting Boekbehoud, the Stichting Vouwbeen, the Verenigde Vrienden van het Handgebonden Boek, and the Cultuurstichting KVGO. The competition was open to binders living in the European Union. The obligatory book to be bound was J.F. Heijbroek and T.C. Greven's Sierpapier: marmer-, brocaat- en sitspapier in Nederland. The binders were also allowed to enter an additional book of their choice. Thanks to the large number of entries and the quality of the bindings, it proved to be the most impor- tant Dutch competition of its kind, and one of the most important in Europe. The exhi- bition could therefore give a good overview of the achievements of both amateur and professional binders at home and abroad. The binders used a very wide variety of mate- rials and techniques.
