Notes and news ŒUVRE PRIZE FOR HELMUT SALDEN Helmut Salden received one of the 1994 Oeuvre Prizcs of the Stichting Fonds voor beeldende kunsten, vormgeving en bouwkunst (Foundation Fund for fine arts, design and architecture). These prizes, of f 50,000 per laureate, are awarded biennially in different branches of the arts. Salden received the Oeuvre Prize in the section Graphic design and typography. The award was bestowed on 9 December in the Kunsthal [Art Hall] in Rotterdam by Mr Aad Nuis, Secretary of State for Cultural Affairs. The ?uvre Prize jury consisted of Benno Premsela (chairman), Wim Beeren, Wil Bertheux, Marie-H?16ne Cornips, Marc Mulders, Renny Ramakers and Carel Weeber. Salden was born in Essen, Germany, in 1910. He studied at the Folkwang Schule there: applied graphic art and photography under Max Burchartz and calligraphy under Wilhelm Poetters. He also taught photography at the Folkwang Schule. A conscientious objector, he fled from Nazi Germany in 1934. In 1938 he arrived in the Netherlands. Here he worked, inter alia, for Piet Zwart and for the publisher A.A.M. Stols.
