Jansen and the Catholic University, Louvain 319 Notes and news AMERICANA IN THE ROYAL LIBRARY, BRUSSELS Following the publication of the Catalogue of Pre-1900 Imprints relating to America in the Royal Library, Brussels (Millwood, N.Y.; Kraus, 1983, 3 vols.: ISBN 0-527-67200-9; cloth $ 230) by Margaret Gale Nicholson, the library's Center for American Studies organized an exhibition of 83 rare and important printed works selected from the 8,000 or so available (Americana 1492-1886. Exhibit by Margaret Gale Nicholson, Nassau Chapel, December 9, 1983 - January 7, 1984. Brussels, Bibliotheque royale Albert ler - Koninklijke Bibliotheek Albert I, 1983, 26 cm, pp. 50). The time- consuming enterprise of organizing the exhibition was made possible by the generous assistance of the Commission for Educational Exchange. The wealth of material on this field held in the Royal Library is surprising. The collections of Karel van Hulthem and the physicist Johan Muller of Berlin, for ex- ample, are extremely well provided with works on North America. Also worthy of mention is the collection of Dutch works of the sixteenth and seventeenth cen- turies-many of them slim pamphlets-dealing with the history of New York, the Dutch West India Company, and Willem Usselinx.
