293 heirs were foreigners to Bruges or that they were unrelated by blood.5 Although the 'all foreigners' interpretation cannot be entirely discounted, it seems unlikely that Vrelant's heirs were foreigners to Bruges. Vrelant had a long association with Bruges as a resident and, after 1456, as a citizen.6 Adriaen de Raet and Betkin Scepens may have been his heirs and his adopted children, if they were not his own. Adriaen de Raet is cited three times in the records of the guild of St. John the Evangelist as Adriaen Vrelant.' Betkin Scepens is three times referred to in the same records as Betkin Vrelants.8 Thus, it seems likely that if 'vreimde' does not mean free to accept or reject the inheritance, it should be interpreted as unrelated by blood rather than as foreigners.9 Notwithstanding this problem, the biography of Willem Vrelant is less prob- lematic than his works. With documents such as this from the Stadsarchief [Municipal Archives], details of his life come even more sharply into focus. The documents referring to his works, however, raise the essential question about whether his artistic production can be integrated into his biography JAMES DOUGLAS FARQUHAR Book reviews HOWARD M[ILLAR] NIXON,
