DE WOLF Dutch National Bibliography 1540-1800: the STCN PREDECESSORS 'There must be many as saddened as I am that, to the grave damage of our literature and the disgrace of our country, nothing as yet exists even faintly resembling a Dutch bibliography.' This provocative assertion could be made by the famous bibliographer Frederik Muller in his `Voorslagen'' of 1878 without significantly distorting history. Such attempts as there had been in this direction had often remained unfinished or were deficient or too limited in scope to be seriously regarded as a national bibliography. Yet it has to be admitted that the number of such attempts has been considerable. The STCN (Short-title Catalogue, Netherlands) carries on where these precursors leave off, although it cannot perhaps be called a bibliography either in the strictest sense of the word. This is not the place for a detailed account of all the earlier endeavours, but some of the milestones deserve being mentioned. The first compiler of a national bibliography was Suffridus Petrus whose De scriptoribus Frisiae was published in 1593.2 But, like many of his successors, he selected his authors according to their importance.
