The history of Guicciardini's description of the Low Countries The history of Guicciardini's description of the Low Countries INTRODUCTION 'Among the sources telling of an earlier condition of our country Lodovico Guicciardini's description of the Low Countries deserves a place of honour for its completeness and accuracy. No one wanting to know what the Seventeen Provinces were like at the beginning of the Revolt against Spain and how they developed in the course of the troubles can find better or more ample information than in the above mentioned work.' With these words Robert Fruin began a study of Guicciardini's book which unfortunately remained unfinished and was printed as a fragment in his Verspreide geschriften [collected writings]. The Leiden historian was engaged on this subject when in 1877 his friend Boele van Hensbroek published an excellent bibliography of the different editions of the Floren- tine's book. To this Fruin added a number of important footnotes.' Since then interest in Guicciardini and his book has never waned. The Antwerp archives have yielded some amazing particulars on the author's life. One after the other the biographers of the printer Plantin have dis- closed unknown facts concerning the Antwerp editions.
