Notes and news Notes and news IN MEMORIAM PIERRE J. H. VERMEEREN Professor Pierre Vermeeren, Director of the Institut fur Niederlandische Philologie in the University of Cologne, passed away on 2 December 1974 in his 62nd year. Born at Maastricht on I October 1913, Vermeeren studied Netherlandish language and literature at the University of Amsterdam, where he also took his doctor's degree, in I953, with a thesis entitled De Bibliotheca Neerlandica Manuscripta van Willem de Vreese. In the same year he was appointed Keeper of MSS. in the Koninklijke Bibliotheek at The Hague, a position he held until 1965, when he became professor of Netherlandish philology in the University of Cologne. With his vast knowledge of the fields of codi- cology and bibliology, the fruits of which way be found in numerous publications, Vermeeren always took a keen interest in Quaerendo, and was in fact a member of our Advisory Board from the very beginning. A personal appreciation by his close friend and colleague for so many years, Professor Wytze Hellinga, which was originally planned for our Spring 1975 number but has had to be postponed for reasons of health, will now be published in our next volume.
