The literature on Gutenberg research is so extensive, and the opinions, hypotheses etc. regarding various aspects of it are so varied that one has to be thoroughly at home in the subject if inquiries into the current situation are not to ensnare one in the complexity of the matter and lead one into time-consuming diversions. In view of this, Hans Widmann's idea of asking a group of specialists to draw up an interim balance-sheet was a happy one. The article which most nearly approaches the aims implied in the title is that by the editor himself. In fact it is the first essay in the book, and is entitled Gutenbergs Wirken - Versuch eines Umblicks. A supremely lucid general account of the whole C'7utenberg question, it is all the more convincing because of the note of perspective maintained throughout.
