Abstract

163 Trobriander kinship system to understand Trobriander myths con- cerning the emergence of the first humans from underground. In "The Prestige of the Cosmogonic Myth", in the third volume, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Myth, Mircea Eliade presents some of the basic themes that pervade most of his work, notably the theme of the sacred center and New Year's rituals as the re-enactment of cosmogony. I must confess that I am among those exasperated by Eliade's use of unreliable data and empirically baseless interpreta- tions. Nevertheless, he sought to uncover the underlying structures of the religious imagination and that is a goal worth pursuing. All in all, this collection would be invaluable to anyone seriously interested in the comparative study of myth.
