Sitting down and getting started Be fairly warned: Those of you anticipating a Louella Parsons-, Hedda Hopper-, or Jimmy Fidler-expose of gossipy tidbits and juicy revelations will be disappointed. This presentation is not intended to be a "revelation" in that titillating sense, nor, for that matter, a formal history of religious studies at Santa Cruz. Where acts and actors are necessary, of course, they will be used; but my goal is not the dangling of personalities before a hungry crowd. Rather, I am primarily concerned with uncovering the structural fault lines which led to the peculiar path of the study of religion on this campus, and, in turn, the fissures which are inherent in the very notion of religion itself. 2. Inserting the paper Salvaged from the ruins of nineteenth-century European universities, this inaugural lecture appears at first glance to be a quaint tradition preserved in the University of California for ritual purposes only. But appearances can deceive.
