ROSS (University of Malawi) Introduction The Christian religion revolves around the question of the meaning and identity of Jesus Christ. Hence in the quest to understand any par- ticular expression of Christianity consideration of Christology is peren- nially at the centre of discussion. A survey of Christian history reveals how much Christological diversity has been developed as the tradition has unfolded It is not surprising that the flourishing of Christianity in twentieth century Africa has generated a fresh concentration on the question of Christology. Considerable attention is now being devoted to the development of an African Christology.1 Scholars are attempt- ing to recast Christology using indigenous African forms and categories. An important question, however, is how closely this scholarly enterprise is related to the experience of Christians at the grassroots.
