A.T.I.S.C.A NEWS AND NOTES A.T.I.S.C.A. On 9-10 December 1987, the Association of Theological Institu- tions in Southern and Central Africa (ATISCA) held a workshop at the University of Zimbabwe on African Christian Spirituality and local Christian communities. Papers were presented by Paul Gifford on 'The use of the Bible in Zimbabwean Christianity', Donald Mackay on 'The New Revelation of John Maranke', Peter Kasenene on 'The place of local communities in ecumenical activi- ty', and John Weller on 'A centre of healing in Zimbabwe'. In addition numerous reports on research in progress were given, the most notable perhaps being Ngwabi Bhebe's account of church communities in the Mberengwa area during the war of liberation, and the report by Carl Hallencreutz of what was modestly termed a mini-project studying urban Christianity in Zimbabwe. Ten students had been encouraged as part of their written assignments to write a report on urban Christian communities based on field- work during the vacation, and one of the students, Lovemore Chirobe, had pursued the subject in a dissertation. This example of a group research initiative was thought to be well worth encouraging as part of an on-going ATISCA programme. The possibility of mobilizing students in a team to investigate common questions was manifestly a most fruitful way of gathering important data at the street or grass-roots level. The students' reports could then be analysed in seminars and discussed in a wider forum. It was also hoped that other disciplines would be enlisted in the pro- gramme. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of Religion in Africa Brill
