Andrew Barnes’s Making Headway makes several scholarly contributions. It takes on the ambitious task of documenting several connected cultural aspects of the broad colonial and Christian missionary encounter in multi-ethnic, multi-religious Northern Nigeria. In the course of brilliantly accomplishing this task, Barnes succeeds in two related epistemological tasks. He sheds new, invaluable light on the character and depth of colonial cultural projects in Northern Nigeria. He also puts these projects in dialogue with wider theoretical and conceptual debates regarding the nature of civilizing missions, hegemony, social engineer- ing, cultural imperialism, cultural agency, and modernity. The book has two main preoccupations. One is to tell the conjoined and complementary stories of how Christian missionaries and European colonial administrators, through sev- eral cultural projects, idioms, and rhetoric, attempted to assimilate Northern Nigerian peo- ples into a cultural universe of European Enlightenment values, objects, and mannerisms.
