Delving into municipal archives of Venice, Florence, Bologna, and Siena, Guy Geltner creates a picture of prisons in the fourteenth century that is both vibrant and engaging. Coming from his dissertation and work as a Fellow at Lincoln College, Oxford, Th e Medieval Prison explores the role of the prison in the pre-modern Italian commune. Geltner argues that, unlike the modern prison, the medieval prison was an integral part of city life, existing in the center of the urban landscape, with mechanisms and administration in place to manage the institution and control the inmates. Th is is a departure from the common view of modern penology, which places the rise of rehabilitative prisons at the sixteenth century. Geltner uses the archival sources to reconstruct life in the prisons, showing how both the building and the inmates operated in the greater Italian city- state.
