This anthology of travel literature presents selections from printed travel accounts, primarily from the sixteenth century, divided up into sections on travel to Africa, to Asia, to America, and to Europe. The majority of the excerpts are between fi ve and fi fteen pages, and though most were written by Europeans, the volume also includes some readings by non-Europeans, for example Ma Huan’s fi fteenth-century Chinese account of his journey around the Indian Ocean. The introduction serves not only to give background for the readings, but also to guide the reader’s analysis of the texts. It opens with a quotation from Lévi-Strauss, reminding the reader that these early modern travelers imposed their own categories on what they saw.
