Review of Books REVIEW OF BOOKS Samuel CHEON, The Exodus Story in the Wisdom of Solomon: A Study in Biblical Interpretation (Journal for the Study of the Pseudepigrapha, Supplement Series 23), Sheffield Academic Press, Sheffield 1997, 169 pp., cloth, £ 27.50, $ 45.00, ISBN 1-85075-670-8. This study, a revised version of a doctoral dissertation which was accepted by the faculty of Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley CA in June 1994, focuses on discovering the hermeneutical methods the author of Wisdom of Solomon (henceforth: PsSol) has used to interpret the Exodus story. This inves- tigation is accomplished through a comparative analysis of Wisd. 11,1-14 and 16,1-19,22 mainly with the Exodus text and tradition, which here means the Exodus stories in the Pentateuch, the Psalms and the Intertcstamental litera- ture, such as Ezekiel the Tragedian, Artapanus, Philo and Josephus. To accomplish the purpose of this study, the author in Chapters 2 and 3 takes the following steps: (a) He describes and defines each literary unit of 11,1-14 and 16,1-19,22, discussing the scholarly issues it raises. (b) He isolates the textual materials in each literary unit according to the corresponding biblical sections, because different materials arc amalgamated.
