Abstract

364 REVIEW OF BOOKS Catherine HEZSER, Form, Function, and Historical Significance of the Rab- binic Story in Yerushalmi Neziqin (Texte und Studien zum Antiken juden- tum, hrsg. von Martin Hengel und Peter Schäfer, 37), J.C.B. Mohr (Paul Siebeck), Tübingen 1993, xi and 437 pp., cloth DM 228.__. ISBN 3 16 146148 7. The rabbinic narratives of the Palestinian Talmud or Talmud Yerushalmi are treated in this book as a distinct literary genre revealing rabbinic ideology and world-view in a paradigmatic way. A limited selec- tion is made from the stories of the Bavot tractates because their outlook is different from that of the rest of the Yerushalmi. This study combines an analysis of the forms and the redaction of the story under the strong impact of Baruch M. Bokser's, Jacob Neusner's and Peter Schäfer's approach to rabbinic literature. The first part consists of a lengthy analysis of the stories in the three Bavot tractates in the context of the respective sugya in which it is incor- porated. A tripartite comment accompanies the translation of every story on 1) redactional context, 2) literary form, 3) historical significance.
