James D. PURVIS, Jerusalem the Holy City, A Bibliography (ATLA Bibliography Series, No. 20), Metuchen, N.J. London, 1988, xii and 499 pp. , cloth $ 42,50

James D. PURVIS, Jerusalem the Holy City, A Bibliography (ATLA Bibliography Series, No. 20),... 105 War, and reprints from Hellenica et Judaica. Hommage à halentin Nikiprowet- zky, Louvain-Paris, 1986 (` Le récit de la Cr6ation dans les Antiquitésjuives de Flavius jos6phe'), and NTS 31, 1985 ('Les "Antiquit6s juives" de Flavius J osèphe: manifeste anti-chrétien'). Part IV contains three articles on the constitution of systems and myths, concepts and corpora, namely a reprint from ANR W 11/20.1 ('La Bible grecque d'Aquila et l'id6ologie du judaisme ancien'), 'Du mythe de Massada a 1'ideologie du IIIe Tem- ple' (pp. 219-246) and 'Gen?se et avènement de l'apocalyptique' (pp. 247-278). An introduction on subjects of research, method and terms, and a conclusion on the basic differences between Judaism and Christianity, complete the book. Part I is too general for specialists, whereas the discussion of details in the other articles may appeal to scholars, but perhaps less to other readers. The short general introductions at the beginning of each part are clearly foremost meant for the benefit of the non-specialist, but they only em- phasize the unbalanced character of the book as a whole. Not only with regard to content, but also to the form the book is varied. Some articles abound with footnotes, other ones have few http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal for the Study of Judaism Brill
