M.A. WILLIAMS' book represents a revised version of a Harvard disser- tation (1977), mentioned by STROUMSA in his own Harvard dissertation (1978), revised by 1982, in print by 1984, one year before WILLIAMS' book. WILLIAMS is concerned with the Platonic background, STROUMSA with the Jewish background of gnostic myth. Both are doing a good job, which is not a mere repetition of what was already known forty years ago. WILLIAMS' book is a well documented and precise study of late antique terminology concerning immobility and stability as attributes of gods and characters representing either the best potentialities of the human race, or the traits of transcendence.
