Abstract

68 FRIEDMAN mentions in his introduction the discussion of marriage and the family in S. D. GOITEIN'S A Mediterranean Society, Vol. III, which appeared after his book had gone to press. GOITEIN, for his part, refers enthusiastically in his preface to FRIEDMAN'S 'forthcoming book'. The two works complement each other, but readers of GOITEIN may be disap- pointed on turning to FRIEDMAN. His account is elegantly written, accessible to the general reader, and of great interest to the social historian. FRIEDMAN concentrates on the legal tradition, and writes for specialists. He makes few concessions to the reader, whose progress through complex arguments is impeded at every point by endless repeti- tions and cross-references, clumsy and imperfect English, and far more misprints than are tolerable in a learned work.
