THE WISDOM STANCE OF ENOCH'S REDACTOR BY ROBERT A. COUGHENOUR Holland, Michigan In a 1975 article Benedikt OTZErr recognized the need for and called for investigations of the relation of wisdom to certain groups of pseudepigraphic literature' ). This paper presents a discussion of the redaction of I Enoch in relation to its wisdom elements and hopes to contribute to the discussions now going on in the field. All who have studied the Book of Enoch recognize its composite nature. M. RIST, for example, views this fact in a nearly despairing way: It is obvious that Enoch is a complex book lacking unity of treatment and of concepts. Consequently, it is exceedingly difficult, if not im- possible, to state the actual views of the compiler2). With all necessary reserve and with proper readiness to revise my opinion, I propose that the key to the compilation is the wisdom stance of its final editor. While this brief article does not purport to present a redaction history of the book, since after all not all its elements are treated, nor all its forms traced, I maintain that one may still be reasonably confident of the final editor's position.
