YORK Cincinnati Since 1930, the date of the appearance of Paul KAHLE'S Masoreten des Westens, II 1), a great many books and articles have been written on matters relating to the Targumim 2). Many of these studies have been textual, either in relating the new discoveries to the standard texts of the various Targumim, or in presenting new critical editions of the Targumim. Others have taken a literary approach in attempting to define the literary genre of the Targumim, particularly in relation- ship to other rabbinic texts, such as the Midrashim. Still others have used the Targumim in the study of the development of biblical inter- pretation and religious thought, especially in comparison with the New Testament and early Christian doctrines. In addition, modern scholars have increasingly studied the Targumim for the light that they cast, for example, on such age-old problems as the language spo- ken in Jesus' time, or the origin of the Peshitta, or the more recent problems related to the Qumran scrolls.
