68 German translation (by Gerhard May), I will abstain from assessing the work qua talis. For the benefiit of potential readers of the German edition here follows a brief sketch of its main lines. The author's starting point might be defined thus : the history of the Ancient Church should be written as the history of the christianizing of the Ancient World. CHADWICK describes the way of the Gospel from Jerusalem to Rome (ch.1), presents us with a sketch of "Faith and Order" in those early days (ch.2) and continues with an account of the spreading and growth of Christendom in the first and second centuries (ch.3). Ch. 4-6 deal with the first theologians, properly speaking (Justin, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Clemens, Origenes), and the paschal and "monarchian" controversy ; a general view of the state of things on the eve of the christiania tempora is presented in ch. 7. Two more chapters (8-9) are about Constantine, Nicea and the sequel of the Arian controversy, while ch. 10 describes the conflict between Christianity and Paganism in the fourth century.
