A Suggested Reading for 11q mElchizedek 17

A Suggested Reading for 11q mElchizedek 17 A SUGGESTED READING FOR 11Q MELCHIZEDEK 17 BY DANIEL F. MINER The General Theological Seminary, New York, N. Y., U.S.A. 11Q Melchizedek, characterized by A. S. VAN DER WOUDE as an "eschatological midrash," 1) is an exegetic document of the type already known in 4Q Florilegium. In it a series of isolated Old Testament texts are taken out of their original context and are inter- preted to support the community's beliefs about Melchizedek. Scholars who have been interested in this scroll have, however, had to deal with the fragmentary state of the text's preservation, its many lacunae and its high number of almost illegible letters. The purpose of this note is to suggest a new reading and interpretation of line 17 of the scroll. Line 17 has more than its share of lacunae and difficult readings. VAN DER WouDE transliterates it as He translates the line: "die Auslegung dessen: die BERGE werden ihren Ertrag bringen (?) .................. ? ...... fiir alle ....... ....." 2) His uncertainty of the meaning of as "ihren Ertrag," or in a later article, "their yield" 3), is reflected in the question mark which he places after each translation. Abstract

A SUGGESTED READING FOR 11Q MELCHIZEDEK 17 BY DANIEL F.
