Since J. Sterenberg ( The Use of the Conditional Sentences in the Alexandrian Version of the Pentateuch [1908]), there has been no extensive treatment of the LXX conditionals. Today, his linguistic approach is outdated and even the textual basis of the Septuagint has been revised in new critical editions. Therefore, Anwar Tjen’s book On Conditionals in the Greek Pentateuch is more than welcome. T.’s study of translation syntax is a very appropriate way of examining the LXX conditionals. His focus is on entire constructions or syntagms in the Hebrew text of the Pentateuch as far as they have been interpreted as conditionals in the LXX . In fact, his approach is a comprehensive treatise on the conditionals both in biblical Hebrew and LXX Greek with comparisons to contemporary Koine Greek. The focus is on the study of the syntax from a linguistic point of view, not on translation technique as such. He is especially interested in Hebrew interference in the Greek translation. After an introduction the book is divided into the following chapters: (1) Hebrew conditionals; (2) Greek conditionals; (3) Identification and interpretation of Hebrew constructions as conditionals in the LXX ; (4) Collocational features in the LXX
