There are few books from Jewish antiquity that rival Ben Sira in terms of textual pluriformity and text-critical difficulty. Under the conviction that each text form is worthy of study as an entity with its own integrity rather than being simply evidence for the “original” reading, the editors convened a symposium on the texts and versions of Ben Sira in Metz in October 2009. The 16 articles in this excellent volume represent the majority of the papers delivered at the conference. Taken collectively, they provide the reader with a status quaestionis for the textual study of Ben Sira as well as new and penetrating insights for each text form of the book. The first section of the volume deals with the Hebrew texts of Ben Sira. Jeremy Corley studies the characteristics of manuscript C and draws a parallel between its anthological nature and some Torah and Psalms manuscripts from Qumran. He also discerns in C a tendency to focus on social ethics while avoiding theological topics. In his contribution, Pancratius Beentjes addresses methodological concerns with reconstructing portions of text or retroversion into Hebrew.
