Alternative Targum Traditions: The Use of Variant Readings for the Study in Origin and History of... This volume will find a welcome home in both the generalist and the specialist’s library. The content of the book ranges from basic questions of what is a Targum to detailed analysis of textual variants among the various witnesses. However, all of this is in service of research questions that swirl around the origin and development of Targum Jonathan (1). Although the text is definitely forging new ground and developing new trajectories for further research in relation to Targum Jonathan , the authors recognize their major dependence on the works of Rimon Kasher (לנביאים תרגום תושפות) and Goshen-Gottstein (מתרגומי שקיעים הארמיים המקרא), volumes that are only available in Hebrew and are out of print (4). As a whole the book attempts to answer questions about the origin and development of Targum Jonathan by “(1) investigation into the Tosefta Targurms and (2) study of the quotations from alternative Targum traditions that occur in rabbinic and medieval Jewish literature” (2-3). Chapter 1 actually takes a step back and surveys the larger picture, dealing with both the definition and backgrounds of the Targumim.
