Judaism in the Roman World: Collected Essays

Judaism in the Roman World: Collected Essays Review of Books / Journalftr the Study ofJudaism 40 (2009) 366-456 397 Judaism in the Roman World: Collected Essays. By Martin Goodman. (Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity 66). Leiden and Boston: Brill, 2007. Pp. xi, 275. Hardback. €99.00 / US$ 129.00. ISBN 90-04-15309-8. This volume contains nineteen stimulating essays written between 1990 and 2006, mostly in Festschriften or conference collections and now thankfully made widely accessible. Although their topics range in time from the 1st to the 4th centuries CE., they display a consistent critical method, and their arrangement in this vol- ume allows a set of coherent theses to emerge which are of considerable signifi- cance for all scholars of early Judaism. Not every collection of essays justifies their assembly and republication; this one clearly does. Goodman's trademark method is to insist on the paucity and the unreliability of our historical evidence, and thus to bring into question many of the assump- tions that govern scholarship: "Throughout there is a strong concern to clarify the limitations of the surviving evidence for ancient Judaism and to encourage gentle scepticism about some of the later myths about Judaism" (vii)-myths cre- ated by both Christians and rabbis in subsequent centuries. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal for the Study of Judaism Brill
