CHRISTIANIZATION OF ANCIENT JEWISH WRITINGS BY JAN WILLEM VAN HENTEN & BERNDT SCHALLER University of Amsterdam & Universität Gottingen One of the seminars of the international New Testament Society SNTS, The Early Jewish Writings and the New Testament, has com- pleted its work during the Tel Aviv conference (August 2000) with a thorough discussion of the issue of the christianization of ancient Jewish writings. Many sessions of the seminar have been devoted to individ- ual Jewish writings, such as Josephus' Contra Apionem, the Testament of job, 4 Maccabees and the Live ofadam and Eve.' The problem of Christian additions to and adaptations of these writings came up during several meetings,' but was never discussed in detail, although pioneers in the field of the Christian transmission of Jewish writings like Michael Stone, Bob Kraft and Marinus de Jonge rendered important contributions to the seminar.3 One of the three seminar sessions in Tel Aviv concerned a method- ological discussion of questions like: What do we mean when we call writings Jewish or Christian? What are the relevant sources in con- nection to Christian transmissions? What kinds of 'christianization' did occur? How can we make scholarly claims about such 'christianiza- tions'
