Itineraries appear vulnerable to the turmoil of power politics. A reality in the domain of political philosophies and action pro- grams alike. And therefore in the realm of terminology. This is less the case in the more sedate area, or so it is felt, of philosophy, religion, cultural processes. How is it possible therefore to explain the aura surrounding 'fun- damentalism'-a compound of novation, obscure intrusion from unforeseen levels into the life of peoples and societies, unexpected, menacing, the quintessential non-rationality? Could so much happen in so little time? Are we facing the irruption of literally historical novation at regional, or world, levels? Repertories-encyclopaedias or dictionaries-are of little help, referring us, as they mostly do, to specific phenomena of certain religions and cultures, notably Christian Protestantism in the Western world. A more persistent survey of the socio-cultural and political histories of major geo-cultural areas of the world through the long duration-the depth of the historical field-is more rewarding.
