The present book is the first fruit of a research project supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation under which a corpus of all extant traditions ascribed to the early Muslim traditionist ʿUrwa b. al-Zubayr (d. ca 93–94/712–713) has been collected and classified. The corpus amounts to around 10,000 traditions of varying length and subject matter. In the book, the traditions relevant to the Sīra, the biography of the Prophet Muḥammad, are examined specifically with the aim of proving the authenticity of a substantial portion of the traditions as going back to ʿUrwa. Eight major events in the life of Muḥammad for which long traditions and letters of ʿUrwa are available are treated in detail: 1. The beginning of revelation, 2. The Hijra, 3. The battle of Badr, 4. The battle of Uḥud, 5. The slander against ʿĀʾisha, 6. The battle of the Ditch and the Banū Qurayẓa, 7. The treaty of al-Ḥudaybiyya, 8. The conquest of Mecca. The thorough and careful analysis of the relevant ʿUrwa traditions and later transmission by the authors impressively demonstrates the authenticity of many of the texts ascribed to ʿUrwa and the reliability of their chains of transmission.
