What we call the Near East to-day has always been the scene of momentous events and the field of ever abundant, ever changing creative civilizations. From it Europe has received a rich heritage which it has developed to a very high standard, whereas the Near East, in its present state, has retained only the character of a bridge between East and West, but also pregnant with political and social changes leading its own way and revealing its own personality. With a few exceptions, the East Mediterranean was the attraction of ancient travellers, who, while cruising its shores, or penetrating into its interior, resembled joyous children playing in a well-kept garden round the shores of a lake.
