(=... 124 The conclusion that Dr. von Grunebaum reaches from the study of these and other intellectual leaders, as well as from direct observation of the contemporary Middle East, is that there are factors which point to the "reconciliation of tradition with the demands of modern, of Western, thought as the foremost problem of Islamic civilization. The desider- atum is an adjustment entailing a minimum of actual change but sufficiently revitalizing to lead to both a political and cultural resurgence" (p. 226). It is not yet clear, concludes the author, what the values of this resurgence arc going to be. Moral scepticism and despair of progress prevail in spite of the universal desire for independence and democracy. The author thinks that some of the difficulties facing the Muslim modernist would be removed if the modernist could "assume a less twisted reaction to the phenomenon of cultural borrowing", and if he did not try "to demonstrate the harmony of modern philosophy both with the traditional beliefs of Islam and with Arab medieval philosophy" (p. 228).
