Bringing together nineteen scholars from various academic and national backgrounds, the volume The Global Worlds of the Swahili edited by Roman Loimeier (University of Florida) and Rüdiger Seesemann (Northwestern University) sets out to break away from descriptions of the East African Swahili Coast as an homogenous cultural ar- chipelago, emphasizing instead the ‘transitory, shifting and plural character of Swahili history, society and worldviews’ as the editors write in their introduction. One of the main reasons why the book succeeds in this goal is through the remarkable attention to the multiple processes of negotiation and debate characterizing Muslim life along the East African coast.
