The texts that we built upon were chosen mainly to meet pedagogical require- ments (not too long, a translation preferably available, di V erent peri- ods covered, etc.). I have however been careful to ensure a certain degree of ‘typicality’, and therefore ‘generalisability’, with regard to stylistic features and thematic aspects of the periods of 20th century Egyptian literary history.
