Dans un nombre assez restreint de chapitres il étudie comment ce mouvement a commenc6 et quelle était la base de départ, quels ont 6t6 les proc6d6s utilisés, quel est le r6sultat pratique, quels sont enfin les problemes qui restent à résoudre. L'auteur reconnait la difficult6 de brosser un tableau exhaustif de la situation dans les différents pays musulmans de m6me qu'il avoue l'impossibilit6 dans laquelle il se trouve d'appr6cier la véritable signification de ces réformes du point de vue philosophique. Tout au plus voit-il les grands courants qui ((d6chirent)) aotuellement le monde musul- man : d'une part la tentation de la modernisation - et ceci souvent sous influence marxiste-et d'autre part un retour vers une plus grande orthodoxie pour affirmer son identité face aux s6quelles de la colonisation. C'est sur une interrogation concernant I'avenir que se termine l'ouvrage de Norman Anderson. Mais n'est-il pas significatif qu'à la derni6re ligne et comme un espoir pour le monde musulman, il cite 'Abd al-Räziq dont la (i laicit6)> fit scandale en Egypte ! A. M.
