AL-GAZALI'S CONCEPTION OF HAPPINESS BY MUHAMMAD ABUL QUASEM THE concept of happiness as the aim of man is central to all religions - and most systems of ethics. It is in the light of this concept that voluntary actions of man are evaluated as good or bad, right or wrong, or in some similar way. The treatment of the problem of happiness and misery, however, is not the same in all systems of thought: in the ethical systems presented by Greek and Muslim philosophers this problem is discussed systematically, and sometimes even a complete work or a complete chapter of a work is devoted by a philosopher to its discussion 1. In the Qur'an there is a vivid and lively description of various aspects of happiness and misery 2 - their nature, their degrees, classification of man according to these degrees and so on. But this description is not to be found in one place or one chapter of the Qur'an ; on the contrary, it is scattered throughout the book and is given in different connections especially in the context of the attributes of believers, unbelievers, hypocrites, devils and so forth.
