NONNA LEONIDOVNA GRACH Nonna L. Grach NONNA LEONIDOVNA GRACH On January 1999 Nonna Leonidovna Grach, a remarkable archaeologist and explorer of Ancient Classical culture would have been seventy. Nonna Leonidovna was born in Leningrad. At the time of the Second World War, when she was a schoolgirl, she stayed in the besieged city and bore all the hardships of the Leningrad blockade. She was awarded a medal For Defence of Leningrad . In 1952 she graduated from the Leningrad University and in 1953 began to work in the Department of the Antique World of the State Hermitage Museum, with which her whole life became tied forever. In 1979 she became the head of the Northern Black Sea section of the Department. Nonna’s activities in the Museum were numerous and manifold. She was the curator of the antique collection, gave much attention to educational work (lecturing, excursions in the Hermitage, school groups, teaching students, etc.). During the years of her work in the Hermitage she advised many Russian and foreign museum specialists and institutions. Nonna Leonidovna was an experienced researcher, combining in her work a thorough study of artefacts produced by ancient craftsmen with investigation of general historical problems.
