AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF THE KALANEGIR VALLEY (KOSH-AGACH REGION, ALTAI REPUBLIC): PETROGLYPHS AND SCYTHO-SIBERIAN KURGANS IN A DISCONTINUOUS PERMAFROST AREA. A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH IGNACE BOURGEOIS, JARI HINSCH MIKKELSEN, LEON VAN HOOF, WIM VAN HUELE, JEAN BOURGEOIS, ROGER LANGOHR, LAURENCE CAMMAERT and HUGO DECLEIR A Belgian research project on Scytho-Siberian kurgans was carried out in the Altai Republic from 1995 till 1998 (fig. 1 ) 1. Campaigns during the summers of 1996 and 1997 allowed it to gather a comprehensive database about the archaeological features in several valleys in the eastern and southern part of the Chuya depression. As a result, 49 sites spread over 17 valleys were mapped and described in detail. One of these was the Kalanegir valley (fig. 2). Pedological and geophysical investigations in this valley showed that several Scytho-Siberian kurgans were located within a local permafrost area. This article will give an overview of the research carried out at Kalanegir. Until 1996, this valley was undescribed in the archaeological literature. The research carried out in 1996 and 1997 had three complementary objectives. One aim was to unravel the genesis of the valley and relate this to the present physical situation.
