He certainly succeeds in expressing his own pas­ sions and convictions with power, in a text that is more vivid and evocative than many an autobiography. Lee is a fine storyteller. The most fascinating and persuasive chapters are those in which he reflects on the lives of some of his heroes, ranging from Mother Theresa of Calcutta, John Wesley and Therese of Lisieux, to two sports coaches: Bela Karolyi and Pat Riley. Riley is apparently in great demand as a motivational speaker, and the tone of Lee’s writing also seems more often motivational than meditational. There can be no doubting Lee’s intense commitment to his calling, but is he right to demand so much of others? (“Before going on vacation or to a party, I will bring to mind a particular major religious instructional problem that I need to solve.”) Is effectiveness really so dependent on such extreme single-mindedness? One cannot fail to be astonished at the magnitude of Lee’s vision and the many sur­ prising episodes on the journey, his excursion into the world of gastronomy being a case in point.
