Stephen Pattison is a practical theologian with a background in healthcare chaplaincy and NHS management. Th is engaging collection of essays showcases the broad sweep of his scholarly and personal interests and experiences, and is a key instalment in his prolific literary output which will be of interest well beyond the confines of academic theology. Th e ‘challenge’ referred to in the title is multi-layered. Pattison’s aim is to pro- mote a practical theology which rises to the challenge of being publicly visible and relevant without relinquishing what he considers to be the most humanizing among its traditions, methods and insights in the interests of capitulating to secular trends. However, the challenge is also directed to those operating in non-religious and non- academic worlds to consider the transferable benefits inherent in the processes of practical theology.
