Scripture: A Guide for the Perplexed , written by William Lamb

Scripture: A Guide for the Perplexed , written by William Lamb William Lamb, Scripture: A Guide for the Perplexed , Bloomsbury Guides for the Perplexed (London: Bloomsbury T & T Clark, 2013), viii + 209 pp. Hardcover £ 60.00, Paperback £ 14.99, ISBN 9780567149534. This is a clear-eyed and helpful survey of different ways of reading the Bible. It is not an introduction to various methods of biblical criticism in themselves or to literary theory, but “an exploration of the theological interpretation of scripture” (vi). This perspective takes Scripture seriously as a source for the theological understanding of God, moving beyond Scripture as only a cultural artifact in the western world. Yet problems remain. For one, there are issues of the inconsistencies of Scripture, with varying biblical accounts. Also, there is the question of what and how many books constitute the Christian canon? There are issues of biblical translation with the recognition that this is an unfinished task, and the issues caused by translations which inevitably involve interpretations. Plus, there are controversial issues about authorship of biblical books and, from secular critics, questions about the moral integrity of Scripture. Clearly, the questions throng. No wonder there is need for a “guide for the perplexed”! How, then, do contemporary Christians http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of Reformed Theology Brill
