Mystery Unveiled: The Crisis of the Trinity in Early Modern England , written by Paul C.H. Lim

Mystery Unveiled: The Crisis of the Trinity in Early Modern England , written by Paul C.H. Lim Paul C.H. Lim, Mystery Unveiled: The Crisis of the Trinity in Early Modern England , Oxford Studies in Historical Theology (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2012), xvi + 488pp., $74.00, ISBN 9780195339468. This volume adds to the growing body of literature on the Trinity in the seventeenth-century. This neglected field has much to offer to theologians and historians, since the seventeenth-century was marked by wide-scale assaults on the doctrine of the Trinity and a greater appreciation for its practical use. Paul Lim attempts to clarify the Socinian side of the story, with emphasis on Great Britain. While it is common to treat the Socinians as precursors to the Enlightenment exaltation of reason above Scripture, Lim argues that Socinianism represented a self-conscious outworking of the Reformation sola scriptura principle (38). He shows that the presuppositions of both anti-trinitarians and trinitarians dictated their range of possible exegetical conclusions. However, Lim does not adequately account for the fact that Reformed hermeneutics were an integral part of the sola scriptura principle. In six chapters, Lim treats a wide range of well-chosen authors. Most of the major players in seventeenth-century trinitarian debates appear here, including Socinians (chapters one and three), Roman Catholics (chapter three), http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of Reformed Theology Brill
