In his book, Côte d’Ivoire; Coup d’État de 1999. La Vérité, enfijin! [The 1999 Coup d’État in Côte d’Ivoire: The Truth, at Last!], Joachim Beugré has provided readers with very useful informa- tion. In the 214-page publication, it has been documented that in the 18 years following the death of Félix Houphouët-Boigny, fijirst president of Côte d’Ivoire in December 1993, the country has experienced an unprecedented cycle of political instability, ethno-regional violence, and multiple (attempted and successful) military coups d’état , all of which culminated in an electoral stalemate between the incumbent president Laurent Gbagbo (a Southerner) and challenger Alassane Dramane Ouattara (a Northerner) both of whom claimed the Presidency following the October-November 2010 presidential elections. As a result of Gbagbo’s refusal to acknowledge defeat and relinquish the presidency http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png African and Asian Studies Brill
