184 REVIEW ARTICLES Husserl's Ethics? Review of Edmund Husserl, Vorlesungen über Ethik und Wertlehre 1908-1914, ed. Ullrich Melle, Husserliana, Vol. 28, Dordrecht: Kluwer 1988. This well-organized critical edition of Husserl's earlier lectures on ethics and value theory makes available for the first time an extensive treatment of Husserl's views on a number of fundamental questions in ethical theory. The edition itself is good, and much of what is contained in the lectures is new and significant; nevertheless their content will still be found disappointing by many who expect to find an example of a Husserlian "ethics" in the sense of a moral philosophy here. The importance of these lectures and the selected texts accompanying them derives from the light they shed on Husserl's notion of rationality, his ontology of values, and the systematic place for axiology and ethics in his thinking, i.e., on his position on metaethical and general systematic ques- tions concerning the status and role of values. The Husserlian distinctions drawn here between the axiological and the practical spheres, and then within the practical sphere the distinction between the broader ethical realm, which covers all of human action, and the moral realm, are also significant.
